By The Pointer Sisters:
We are family
I got all my sisters with me
We are family
Get up ev'rybody and sing
I was thinking the other day about the different path that our lives have taken ever since Miss B's extra chromosome entered our world.
One of my favorite parts of this path is our new family--all the other families on the same T21 path as us. We have met some pretty amazing people. Some of whom I've met in person...most of whom I have not...but all of them have blessed my life by sharing their story. By being open about their experiences with their children that have Down syndrome. By understanding the ups and downs of having a child with special needs.
Ev'ryone can see we're together
As we walk on by
(FLY!) and we fly just like birds of a feather
I won't tell no lie
(ALL!) all of the people around us they say
Can they be that close
Just let me state for the record
We're giving love in a family dose
I have been amazed at the love and support that my friends--my family--in the Down syndrome community give to each other. Even though we are spread across the country and across the globe--even though we come from different backgrounds, religions, nationalities, political parties...I have seen members of the Down syndrome community rally around parents that have lost children; I have seen prayers being offered for children and other family members in the hospital; I have seen celebrations for new births; I have seen love, acceptance, camaraderie, friendship, and a feeling of FAMILY.
We are family
I got all my sisters with me
We are family
Get up ev'rybody and sing
There are very few groups of people in life that I have felt like I instantly belonged too.
The Down syndrome community is one of them.
Living life is fun and we've just begun
To get our share of the world's delights
(HIGH!) high hopes we have for the future
And our goal's in sight
(WE!) no we don't get depressed
Here's what we call our golden rule
Have faith in you and the things you do
You won't go wrong
This is our family Jewel
We may not be blood-family, but we are chromosome-family.
Which, in my book, is just as good.
We are family
I got all my sisters with me
We are family
Get up ev'rybody and sing
Thank you all for being my extra-family.

What a beautiful post!! It is a wonderful family and we are blessed to be a part of it!!!!
This post is oh so true! Love being a party of this family!
What a great post! It's true, I think most of us feel this way. You described it perfectly!
And now that song will always make me think of our Ds family! :)
Hi! #1: just read about your marathon. Can't even FATHOM doing that so I'm super impressed #2: I wish blogger would install a reply-to-comment feature so I could reply directly to your question! #3: Hmm...LA stuff. Well, I may or may not be much help. We have Disney passes so we spend days off that we desire to get of the house at Disneyland usually. But I know there in Long Beach is a great aquarium (Aquarium of the Pacific I believe it's called - haven't been there in a little while. If you don't want to go to Disneyland but want a somewhat "Disney" experience, you can do Downtown Disney: it's basically an outdoor mall with restaurants but it's got the Disney vibe going and it's right outside Disneyland, so free of course.
Also, in Hollywood, is the El Capitan Theatre - you can check their website for what movie is playing while you're there. They are Disney movies - a tad more than regular movies BUT feature a live stage show beforehand and/or interesting props and stuff ususally from the movie you saw. It's more than just your typical "going to the movies" experience. Plus across the street from all the famous handprints, so you can get your fill of the whole Hollywood stuff. Also in Hollywood is Pinks - a famous, popular hot dog place.
Hmmm...there's so much in Downtown LA - much that we haven't done so I can't quite recall specifics. I hear this Old Town Los Angeles thing is fun, but have never done it.
OH, and you should definately go see the LA Temple! The vistors center has been redone - I haven't gone yet - but my friends say it's great. Plus the grounds are beautiful. It's on a busy street, but when you are up on the temple grounds you can't hear the noise at all. I would reccommend that too!
Good luck - sorry so long and probably only minimally helpful!
This post gave me goosebumps, Sista!!!
