I have been through many severe thunderstorms in my life. I've heard the tornado sirens go off several times. Once, while we were in Missouri, there was a massive storm that produced 97 confirmed tornados in about a two day period. Through all of that, I have felt an air of invincibility. Maybe because I have been through so many without every being really scathed, I have just thought of these storms as part of life and no big deal.
Today, though, I am accutely aware of my mortality and the devestation that can come with a tornado. The boy scout ranch in Iowa where four scouts were killed was the same campground where I stayed last week. The building where the chimney collapsed and the four scouts were killed? That was the building were I had worked on crafts only days before. When we had storms at night, we used that building as our "safe" place to gather all the girls in. Those campers could have easily been me or any of my precious young women.
How grateful I am that we were protected. While at the time, I knew we were taken care of because the storm had split around us, I think I didn't then fully comprehend the horrors that could have occured. I can only imagine how I would feel if any one of those teenage girls that were in our care had gotten hurt or killed last week. My heart goes out to those parents who sent their children to camp and never got to see them alive again. I will keep them in my prayers.

Wow, I thought it was scary that we are so close to the camp, but that you were just there...I'm glad the storms missed you last week! I remember going to girls camp and running to the lodge during a warning when I was a youth. (I grew up in the Lincoln stake, but we never went to the Little Sioux camp) It is scary!
I am so thankful that you were ok last week! The entry about prayer and the young women touched me and we will have those boys in our prayers as well!
This is true. You said that you didnt know what you would do if one of them got hurt, I dont know what I would have done if they and YOU would have gotten hurt. That is scary. I too think storms are just a part of life. I'm glad you guys are okay though. I defiantly got chills when Sis. Soden called and told us that!!
I'm a few days behind. I had no idea you were at the camp site the week before...shoot, I didn't even realize you were going to Girl's Camp this year. I'm so glad to hear that the storms split and went right around you. My YW look at me like I'm nuts when I tell them that we always had rain and tornadoes every year at Girls Camp. I remember always having to pack in under that main pavillion and keep all the 1st years from freaking out...and the flooded tents..and sleeping the parking lot b/c someone stole my bed. The joys/blessings of Girls Camp!
Wow that is really scary! To think that you were there just the week before is crazy! I think we all need to be reminded of our own mortality sometimes. Hopefully it makes us appreciate everyday we have a little more!
I'm going to Girl's Camp next week and I'm worried about the weather - especially in the light of the boys that were killed.
How humbling to know that while some are spared, others are not. We truly don't know our day or time do we?
I also wanted to say that I come across your blog weekly in my google alerts as I look for my name - Carrie Craft. So - you're a Carrie and you do crafts. I'm a writer so I'm looking for mentions or what articles people are linking to.
What caught my eye this week is that I read about your Girl's Camp experience which means one thing - that you're LDS. I am too! So - small world and all that.
PS - cutie boys you have.
All the Best,
wow. I just got caught up on your blog, and wow. I can't believe that. I'm so glad that you are all ok, and I can't imagine what those other families are going through. You were all so blessed, and all I can hope is that the families that lost their boys will also be so blessed with peace. Thanks for sharing.
Ok Carrie, I just looked at your links on the side. Cannon Family.. that is my cousin Jeff. Too funny! I think I e-mailed you to say that they were at school there (a LONG time ago), but I never heard back from you, so I guess you've run into them out there!
oh my goodness! how sad. I didn't hear about that. Were they LDS Scouts?
